Sometimes it helps to have a visual reminder of an important message, and it really helps if that visual reminder is as smart as this animation, which just happens to be a winner in the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Student Design Awards.

Titled Painterly Flow, the animation – by graphic design and illustration student Sharon Ross – riffs on the theme of living with less and using fewer resources, as a method of combating climate change. Ross has just won the Foster Award at the RSA event, a long-running and much-respected student competition which challenges emerging designers and creatives to address social, environmental and economic issues through their work.

In fact, Painterly Flow – illustrated with hand-painted individual frames – was so popular that it also won the RSA Staff Choice award, which just adds further clout to the important message behind it.
