Planning a holiday but want to avoid the usual well-trodden tourist traps? How about a trip where you can actually learn valuable skills (and we’re not talking about upping the amount of Sambuca you can drink before you fall over) from local artists and craftspeople, giving those same people the chance to earn a living?
That’s exactly what social enterprise Backstreet Academy is doing, as shown in the above video, made by digital Asian storytelling initiative Our Better World. It gives tourists the opportunity to stay with local, skilled hosts around Asia who then teach the tourists about their craft. That could be anything from jewellery-making to martial arts to traditional dance to stone-carving. Tourists pay the hosts directly, ensuring that the money goes straight to the right people.
Y’see? Holidays don’t always have to be about hedonism, people. And if that idea pushes your buttons, be sure to check Collectively’s guide to guilt-free summer vacations.
