If the bloody, vegan beef burger we raved about recently pushed your buttons, try getting your teeth – and head – around this shrimp, plucked not from the sea, but in a lab. Actually, ‘engineered’ would be a better word for this meatless creation, as it’s been created by some seriously clever people.
Developed by New Wave Foods, the ‘shrimp’ is made from plant proteins and algae. It might not sound appealing, but as the video above – made by Seeker Stories – shows, it seems to taste just like the real thing, and apparently has around the same level of nutrition, too.
And as well as the clear benefit for those who don’t eat meat – or just want to eat less of it – the lab-grown shrimp could help alleviate some of the impact on the planet’s oceans, too, and create a more sustainable way of consuming seafood. Would shrimp connoisseurs Forrest Gump and Bubba dig this far-out new creation? Doesn’t really matter as they’re fictional characters. They don’t get a say. But we’re certainly intrigued.
