You might think that the applications for used airplane tyres is fairly limited, but one company in Mumbai, India, is giving them a new lease of life that few could have predicted, by turning the tyres into colourful, eye-catching footwear.
But even though the stylish, eco-conscious shoes produced by Paaduks feature heavily engineered rubber tyres, there are no chemical processes involved in the making of the shoes. No doubt partly due to the smarts of the skilled workers who craft them.
What’s more, Paaduks ensures these cobblers are paid a fair wage – more than three times the market rate, as the video above (from Our Better India) shows. It’s all down to the clear aims of Paaduks co-founders Jay and Jyothsna Rege, who were determined to create a social enterprise that helped create a sustainable future both for the environment and the skilled workers it employs. Nailed it, then.
