Imagine getting pretty much all your meals for free. Now imagine that you’re helping the planet by doing so. Finally, imagine that this diet is also sending out a powerful message about levels of food poverty and starvation. This is exactly what William Reid has been doing, and all it takes is for him to root around in a dumpster for his food.
Oh, that turned you off, didn’t it? Well, maybe it shouldn’t. Reid is a master of rummaging to munch and gets all his food straight from the dumpster – and he’s been eating pretty damn well from it. How many times has he gotten sick as a result? A big ol’ zero.
As he explains in the video above from The Huffington Post, Reid is aiming to show that a staggering amount of the produce that gets thrown away in the US (around 40 per cent of all its food) is perfectly edible. Along the way, he’s helping to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill (and cutting carbon by not purchasing new goods) and raising awareness of the fact that while all this perfectly good food is thrown away, many people are still living in food poverty. Makes his dumpster-diving look a lot less gross, hey?
