How do you get US retail giant Walmart to start reducing the amount of food it throws away? One way is to get ‘ugly fruit and vegetables’ champion Jordan Figueiredo to phone them up and ask them, via the medium of a wonky cucumber for a phone.
Okay, he doesn’t actually phone them in the above video from The Huffington Post (it’s a cucumber – cucumbers aren’t telephones), but he has been campaigning hard to get Walmart and others to sell misshapen produce and stop ditching it, all of which contributes to the staggering 25 per cent of all homegrown produce that gets wasted in the US. Figueiredo has even collected a petition with over 100,000 signatures, asking Walmart to start selling ugly – and perfectly edible – fruit and veg.
And you know what? As well as being 100 per cent edible, wonky fruit and vegetables are just so much funnier than the boring regular stuff. Cucumber phone receivers? Aubergines with thoughtful faces? Dancing leg carrots? Yes please.
